The history and splendor of Neuschwanstein Castle will draw you in like many before, but read on and heed our warning…
Neuschwanstein Castle
A home for a Disney Princess and a gay vampire?
In the Bavarian Alps, you’ll find this extravagant castle that is a real-life fairy tale. In fact, it was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty’s castle.
What was Sleeping Beauty’s favorite animal? The Zzzzebra.
The castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival masterpiece that defies conventional castle design with its towering spires, dazzling turrets, and a dramatic façade that looks like something crafted by mythical beings. Perhaps vampires…perhaps a gay vampire? *Cue suspenseful music*
The castle was designed by King Ludwig II, affectionately known as ‘Mad King Ludwig’. Inside, the castle unveils a tapestry of rich historical narratives tied to King Ludwig II’s eccentric and flamboyant personality *snap girl*. The interiors are opulently decorated, boasting murals and ornate rooms that reflect Ludwig’s admiration for the kings of France. He never married, had a penchant for heavy perfumes, and had large murals of kings, not queens. He was also known as ‘Mad Ludwig’ and “Moon King”; he had a habit of staying awake at night and sleeping during the day. He would also leave his castle by climbing out of a window instead of walking out the door. Perhaps he actually turned into a bat and flew out of the window rather than use the door?
To sum it up, I would say he was a gay vampire. I don’t think any historian or sane person would agree with me (at least on the vampire part), but if you visit, take a bottle of poppers and a wooden stake. It could go either way.
What’s a vampire’s favorite TV show? The Big Fang Theory
When you’re not in the castle living out your Bavarian lavender Lestat fantasy, there are several hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate, that will let you soak in the lush forests in the area. Then there are nearby sites like Hohenschwangau Castle and the charming village of Füssen that offer an abundance of history and culture.
Prepare to step into a storybook…or perhaps a vampire thriller and visit Neuschwanstein Castle.
